The mantel is a reclaimed barn beam. A raised hearth would have been pretty but we decided against it because of the floor space it takes up. We set the fire box up about a foot off the floor so that if we have a coffee table or ottoman, the fire will still be visible. Having a fireplace will also serve as a back up heat source in the event of a power outage.
